La Rosiere is an up-and-coming attractive resort part of the large Espace San Bernardo, linked to La Thuile in Italy since 1984 with 150km of pistes. Still a well kept French secret, most of the buildings in La Rosiere have a traditional rustic Savoyard feel with low rise chalet-style accommodation built mostly in wood and stone and are situated beside the zigzag road of the St Bernard's pass. The shops and bars are limited and the nightlife laid back.

Espace San Bernardo is the origin of the well known and loveable St. Bernard dog (the clue is in the name). These cuddly mountain rescuers can still be found in La Rosiere today and the St. Bernard dog kennels are always a hit with young children.

La Rosiere provides spectacular panoramic views across the Tarentaise valley towards Les Arcs, St Foy, Val D'Isere and Tignes and down the valley towards Bourg St Maurice, Aime and Moutiers. From the slopes, you also have fantastic views of Mont Blanc.

La Rosiere is a high altitude resort with sunny south facing slopes. The resort boasts an enviable record for outstanding snow conditions and huge dumps of snow (featured as a Top 10 resort for snowfall in the Where to Ski and Board Guide 2006). It often has the best snow in Espace San Bernardo whilst other resorts can sometimes suffer. Fortunately, queues are a rarity, even during busy parts of the season. Another bonus point is that the lift passes are very reasonably priced (2006/7 only 155?) and you can upgrade to include days in nearby resorts (Val D'Isere, Tignes, Les Arcs or St Foy, all within an hour of La Rosiere).

A family friendly resort: La Rosiere has previously won the accolade of 'famille plus montagne', awarded to resorts which specialise in providing well for families. In short this means that La Rosiere takes good care of children and provides great family facilities, events for all ages, child price reductions, child and adult activities and a medical service next to the slopes.

Snowboarding: Several new lifts have been installed in La Rosiere over the past couple of years and the resort has been much improved for boarders, particularly for beginners and intermediates with lots of cruisey runs and wide open pistes. La Rosiere now boasts two terrain parks, one in La Rosiere itself and the other in La Thuile. The park in La Rosiere is 300m long, has several graded jumps, 1 Hip, 9 tables, 1 Big Air, 2 Handrails and a Fun Box. From mid January, La Thuile provides a half pipe for skiers and boarders alike.

Non-skiers: La Rosiere has 10 kms of well maintained footpaths for the non-skier to enjoy and provides access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Other activities include snow-shoe walks, husky sledding and paragliding.

Apres ski: Although not famed for Apres ski, La Rosiere does have a couple of bars. Le Petit Danois has a fun atmosphere and live bands on selected nights. Obviously, no resort is complete without a few restaurants and Le Genepi and L'Ancolie offer the staple alpine delights from the basic pizza up to gourmet treats.

This review was kindly provided by Mike and Laura, owners of Chalet Renard, SnowCrazy, La Rosiere, France.
