Big Sky, MONTANA , USA offers some of the most challenging inbounds terrain in the US with fantastic views across three States and Yellowstone National Park.

Big Sky Skiing and Snowboarding Terrain
Big Sky Resort is made up of two mountains; Lone Mountain and Andesite Mountain, Lone Mountain is the larger and most challenging of the two. The skiing and snowboarding terrain is on open powder fields, double black diamond chutes and cliff drops, heavily treed terrain, steep mogul runs, long groomed trails and gentle beginner slopes. All are serviced by a fast and efficient lift system.

Big Sky’s Lone MountainAdvanced Skiing and Snowboarding
Opened since 1995 the Lone Peak Tram transports skiers and snowboarders up a vertical rise of 9,180 feet to some of the steepest and most challenging double black terrain in the US. In great snow conditions it’s similar to heli skiing and snowboarding. The tram accesses steep open treeless powder fields and tight narrow chutes.

On fresh powder days the queue can be really long for the tram, for those who just can’t wait to make fresh tracks head right from the top of the Gondola to the Challenger Chairlift. This services the steep and open Big Rock Tongue terrain as well as the renowned mogul covered Midnight, Moonlight and Highway trails.

For excellent tree skiing and snowboarding go to the trees under the Shedhorn Chairlift on Lone Mountain or the heavily treed War Dance and Mine Shaft terrain on Andesite Mountain.

Big Sky ski areaIntermediate Skiing and Snowboarding
While intermediates would probably not want to attempt the ride down from the Lone Peak Tram; the mid mountain areas of Big Sky offer great skiing and snowboarding options.

Long tree lined trails of varying steepness lead down from the top of the Swift Chairlift on Lone Mountain, Lobo and Calamity Jane are both fast and challenging.

From the top of the Swift Chairlift turn left and take the Cow Flats trail to the base of the Shedhorn Chairlift where some intermediate trails are left ungroomed.

For a gentle introduction to tree skiing and snowboarding try the trees under the Iron Horse Chairlift, the terrain isn’t too steep and the trees are well placed to get some good turns in.

On Andesite Mountain the groomed Silver Knife trail is really fast first thing in the morning as is Ambush leading under the Ramcharger Chairlift.

Beginner Skiing and Snowboarding
The gentle wide beginner trails are located on the lower mountain areas at Big Sky.

Andesite Mountain is where the majority of beginner green trails are found. The long winding Pacifier trail, located on the right hand side of the Ramcharger Chairlift, is perfect for practising big linking turns. For a little extra speed try the shorter but slightly steeper Safari trail.

On Lone Mountain catch the Gondola up to the top of the Mr K trail for a long fun run back down to the base. The trails under the Explorer Chairlift offer gentlest terrain for first timers.

The Big Sky Snowsports School has lessons for first time skiers and snowboarders with experienced instructors.

Big Sky Terrain Park and Halfpipe
The Swifty Terrain Park, located under the Swift Chairlift, has a wide array of boxes, pipes, barrels and different sized jumps. The well maintained superpipe is located on the left hand side of the Ramcharger Chairlift on Andesite Mountain.

Other Activities at Big Sky
Other activities available at Big Sky are snow shoeing, cross country skiing, sleigh rides, snow tubing, ice skating, horse riding, swimming and fly fishing. The Solace Spa at Big Sky also has beauty and massage treatments.

Big Sky Accommodation
Mountain Village, nestled at the base of the resort, has accommodation in hotels, condominiums, cabins and town homes.

The Shoshone Condominiums, located in the base area between the Gondola and Explorer Chairlift, are very spacious with full kitchens, gas fireplaces and balconies. They sleep between 2 and 8 guests and have an outdoor heated swimming pool and ski and snowboard storage.

Stillwater Condominiums, located a short walk from the base area, have economical studio rooms as well as two bedroom condominiums with full kitchens.

The newly built ski in ski out luxury Powder Ridge Cabins have 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, outdoor private hot tubs and open fireplaces.

A free shuttle bus circulates throughout Mountain Village transporting skiers and snowboarders to and from the base area.

One of the most economical places to stay is the Whitewater Inn located half a mile away on US Highway 191. The hotel has comfortable clean rooms, complementary breakfast, free wireless internet and an indoor swimming pool with a 90 foot waterslide. The free Big Sky shuttle bus does not go to the hotel.

Big Sky Shopping
Ski and snowboard equipment and hire shops are located in Mountain Village as are souvenir shops, grocery stores, art galleries, gift shops and resort logo ware stores.

Big Sky Sports Rental caters for all skiing and snowboarding hire equipment and has the latest demo and fashion gear.

The Big Sky Repair shop has overnight tuning and waxing services for both skis and snowboards.

Big Sky Restaurants
The restaurants at Big Sky range from fine dining to casual family friendly bistros, cafes and steak restaurants. For a fine dining and relaxing experience go to Timbers Restaurant for delicious local Montana cuisine and excellent service.

320 Ranch, a western steak house, specialises in prime beef cuts and is open for dinner every night with sleigh rides available to and from the restaurant.

By Word of Mouth is a family favourite with a full bar, extensive wine list and a popular Friday night all you can eat fish fry.

Before a big day on the slopes go to The Huntly Dining Room for a hearty buffet breakfast served from 6.30am onwards.

Big Sky Nightlife
The liveliest night spot at Big Sky is Chet’s Bar & Grill open for après ski drinks until really late with live music and poker games every night. Every couple of nights it has the Crazy Austrian Brothers Varity Show which puts new meaning to the term crazy comedy act!

New for 2006/2007 at Big Sky
Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin Resort are now interconnected offering joint ski passes making the area one of the largest interconnected resorts in the USA.

Getting to Big Sky
Big Sky, located in south western Montana is a very long drive from the nearest large city.

To get to Big Sky catch a connecting flight from throughout America to Bozeman Airport, 45 miles north of Big Sky. From Bozeman Airport shuttle services, taxis and rental cars are available to transfer you to Big Sky.
